Within WinGuard, the 1500 and 2500 series differ in frame depth, which changes the balance shoe and pivot bar geometry.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha nobody warns you about: PGT has changed balance-shoe designs across production years, so a balance that fits a 2014 WinGuard 1500 will not seat correctly in a 2021 model, even though the windows look identical from the outside. The only reliable way to match it is to pull the visible label etched into the glass corner or the frame jamb, which carries the series code and manufacturing date. If that label’s worn off, our techs measure the shoe pocket and spring length by hand. We default to OEM PGT parts whenever they’re available, but for discontinued hardware we use high-grade aftermarket equivalents that exceed the original specs, and we’ll show you both prices before we start.

Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing

• Window drops when you let go. This is the classic spring-balance failure. The coil or block-and-tackle balance inside the jamb has snapped or the shoe has pulled out of its pocket. This happens more often in Fort Myers because humidity corrodes the spring steel faster than in drier climates.
• You need two hands to lift the sash. The balance is still there but has lost tension, which means it’s on its way out. Wait long enough and you’ll get the drop, usually on the biggest window in the room.
• Cranking effort goes up, then the sash stops moving. On casement and awning windows, the operator gear teeth start stripping. Forcing the crank once it binds is what finishes the job: the gear torque strips clean, and now you’re replacing the whole operator, not just lubricating it.
• Air leaks, whistling, or light coming through the frame edge. Weatherstripping and glazing beads shrink and harden under constant Florida sun exposure. Once the seal is gone, your AC bill climbs and so does the humidity level inside the frame.
• Water staining on the interior window sill after storms. This usually isn’t the glass; it’s the installation flashing or the frame-to-wall seal failing. Impact-rated PGT glass is tough, but the perimeter seals take constant north-south rain shifts and they don’t last forever.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things an owner can safely check: a window that’s bound up because dirt collected in the track, a loose crank handle screw, weatherstripping that’s visible and peelable without taking the sash apart. Those are fair game. What you should not attempt without training is spring-balance work. The balance shoes sit under tension inside the jamb, and the shoe-and-pivot-bar alignment has to be exact or the sash will launch out of the frame when you reset it. We’ve seen fingers pinched, windows thrown, and frames scored by well-meaning DIY attempts. Same warning goes for removing impact glass from a PGT frame: those units are heavier than they look, and a drop on concrete means a shattered laminate sheet and a cut risk.
